The UAS multiplier effect: pathway to innovation [Speech Doekle Terpstra, ARENE annual conference, Finland, 5th May 2010]

5th May 2010 - It is a great pleasure for me, as the Chairman of the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences, to take part in this conference and to exchange ideas with you on the role and development of applied sciences in Europe. A better understanding of the arrangements and best practices in our distinctive countries concerning applied research, should enable us to identify opportunities for sustainable cooperation and improvement of innovation processes.

Higher Education leading in the knowledge triangle! [Column]

posted 13 Sep 2011 00:01 by UASnet .

31st August 2009 - ‘2020’ seems like a magical year. Everyone in Europe is developing goals on diverse topics that must be reached at that time. From all the topics under discussion I would like to invite you to take a closer look into one of the most pressing issues for the social-economic well-being of Europe: the revitalisation of the Lisbon strategy.

What strikes me most in the current debate is the shift in focus. Of course, in order to realise a competitive knowledge-based economy, much attention has already been given to an improvement and intensification of research & development and innovation. But recently the debate has changed. And, as I would like to propose, indeed for the better.

There is a growing consensus that focus on R&D and innovation as such is no longer enough. Instead, we should take the whole knowledge triangle of education, research and innovation into account, and more specifically, put education on top. Higher education is more and more seen as the linking pin in the knowledge triangle that ensures more and better research-based knowledge, innovations and entrepreneurship. It is interesting to see how important European actors put this.

For example, the Ministers at the Leuven conference: “Higher education should be based at all levels on state of the art research and development thus fostering innovation and creativity in society. We recognise the potential of higher education programmes, including those based on applied science, to foster innovation”.

But also the Swedish EU presidency stated: “The current debate about the knowledge triangle tends primarily to focus on the relationship between research and innovation. This conference will focus on the central role of higher education in the knowledge triangle and for European competitiveness”.
And last but not least our own Dutch SER (Social and Economic Council) which proposes to “involve more explicitly (higher) education concerning the development of the European Knowledge Area”.

These comments put higher education into the place it deserves. They support the idea of a standard linkage between education and (demand-driven) research in practice, and the overall importance of higher education for societal development. Therefore the road for good measures and targeted investments in higher education is now open to the European governments. Their challenge lies in tapping the full potential higher education has to offer, in order to tackle the knowledge paradox and deliver new knowledge, applicable innovation and entrepreneurship.

UASnet unites Universities of Applied Sciences from 10 European countries

posted 12 Sep 2011 07:10 by UASnet .   [ updated 19 Oct 2011 06:10 ]

As of 20 January 2011 the Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) from 10 European countries are part of the European network UASnet. In the network they are represented by their national rectors’ conferences. The partners will work together to promote and strengthen the integration and contribution of the UAS sector within the research and innovation strategy of Europe. The teamwork will therefore focus on applied research and the innovation and valorization strengths of UAS throughout European regions.

“It’s a historic moment for professional higher education in Europe”, according to Tim Creedon, the new Irish president of UASnet. Next to giving input on European policy making concerning the applied research function of professional higher education, the partners aim to conduct comparative research on national innovation programs. The network also wants to promote thematic research collaboration between UAS across European borders, in order for UAS to enter into preferred partnerships and increase their staff and student mobility.

Henrik Wolff, vice-chair of UASnet: “I am delighted to see the growing recognition and appreciation for UAS type of research, since it has a considerable impact on economic and social development in European regions. Our teamwork enables us to position UAS research internationally and to encourage joint participation in European research and innovation programmes, together with SMEs and companies from the public sector.”

The partners in UASnet come from: Ireland (chair), Finland (vice-chair), Portugal, Lithuania, Estonia, Flanders, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France.
